While we sincerely hope you never sustain a fire loss in your home, there are a few things we want you to know. Even after a minor kitchen grease fire, your home is vulnerable to secondary damage from smoke and soot. Here are some tips to help assess post fire damage and minimize long term effects on your home. As always, safety first.
If you are having a fire in your home or property.
Get outside and away to a safe place.
Call 911.

Every day Americans experience the horror of fire. But most people don’t understand fire. Only when we know the true nature of fire can we prepare ourselves and our families.
FIRE IS FAST…
There is little time! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house. In minutes, a house can be engulfed in flames.
FIRE IS DARK…
Fire isn’t bright, it’s pitch black. Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness. If you wake up to a fire you may be blinded, disoriented and unable to find your way around the home you’ve lived in for years.
FIRE IS DEADLY…
Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire uses up the oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill. Breathing even small amounts of smoke and toxic gases can make you drowsy, disoriented and short of breath. The odorless, colorless fumes can lull you into a deep sleep before the flames reach your door. You may not wake up in time to escape. (AVFD, MN

THE MAIN TYPES OF FIRE ARE:
PROTEIN FIRE
These include stove-top grease fires, burned or charred meat, fish or fowl and come with an obnoxious odor
WOOD & PAPER FIRE
These include attic fires, fireplace puff-backs, most trash can fires and in general home fires where mostly the wood structure is involved.
SYNTHETIC FIRE
These include fires that involve mainly carpet and upholstered furniture, electrical fires and fires involving plastic materials. They give off a toxic smoke that becomes almost invisible.

THE AFTERMATH…
To give you a picture, the following surfaces and time frames showcase how time and tools are essential for restoration contractors:
SUDDEN IMPACT:
The immediate incident of a fire can have a permanent effect on surfaces such as metal and stainless steel which are vulnerable to hydrogen chloride (HCl) gases upon immediate impact.
Within minutes after a fire, items made of plastics, including small appliances, even marble, can start to become discolored. Older stones and smoke or fire stained fireplaces may require a thorough cleaning to restore their original appearance. Commercially available “smoke removers” may save time and effort.
After a few hours materials such as bathroom grout, existing fiberglass, household plumbing fixtures (chrome), brass, coated steel, appliances, hard wood and upholstered furniture can begin to discolor.
Days following a fire, your painted walls and ceilings can discolor. The beginnings of rust will form on plated metal surfaces, any vinyl floors, clothing and upholstery can become permanently stained.
Within a few weeks, household carpets and rugs can discolor, corrosion begins on plated metal objects and staining appears on glass, crystal and china in some instances they will etch and pit.
